GARRY GARY BEERS | Bass, guitar, keyboards, songwriter, guitar maker

Garry didn’t just hold down the low end for INXS—he built it, shaped it, and eventually started crafting the instruments himself.

He wasn’t born a bassist. Back in Sydney, he picked up acoustic guitar at Forest High School—until a bet with bandmates pushed him onto bass. No lessons, no safety net. Just instinct. That gamble changed everything.

At a random surf club gig, fate kicked in. He crossed paths with Andrew Farriss and Jon Farriss—a meeting that sparked a jam session, then a band, then a movement. First came Doctor Dolphin, then The Farriss Brothers, and finally INXS.

Raised on the thunder of Queen, AC/DC, and Led Zeppelin, Beers carved out a simple mission: keep it tight, loud, and unshakable. In a band stacked with guitars and keys, he was the anchor—the guy everyone leaned on.

Onstage, he was more than rhythm. Call him the band’s “databank.” When Michael Hutchence got lost in the moment, Beers was there, quietly feeding him the next line. Rock chaos, controlled from the shadows.

INXS didn’t start with world domination in mind. They were just kids chasing gigs, fuelled by ambition and zero backup plans. Then came Chris Murphy—and suddenly the world stage was calling. By the time Shabooh Shoobah hit the U.S., they were already battle-tested and hungry.

One surreal peak? Opening for Queen at Wembley, with Freddie Mercury watching from the wings—and loving it.

These days, Beers is based in Los Angeles, still creating. His handcrafted GGB basses channel his iconic ’58 Fender, right down to the scars. And with AshenMoon, he’s still writing, recording, and chasing that groove.

Ask him to sum it all up? He points to What You Need—a track that captures the INXS DNA: rhythm, release, and pure escape.
